B1 is a 24-hour fasting event for youth which raises money to empower the poor and disempower unjust systems sustaining poverty in our world. B1 is a ministry of The Advance, a project arm of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church.

Since the youth of Birmingham First began studying Africa for their "Penny Project" they've looked for ways to know about that region of the world more authentically. So last Sunday we invited Ryan Edwards of 
Likewater Drumworks to come lead a drum workshop and tell us about his experience living in West Africa.
The Youth at Birmingham First UMC, Birmingham, MI, decided one day over a planning lunch that they wanted to do something BIG for missions. So they've decided to raise one penny for every person afflicted with HIV/AIDS in Africa.
Prepared with statistics regarding food and wealth distribution around the world [from Church World Service] our youth and counselors participated in a meal together that exposed the disproportionate availability of food to different groups around the world.
